Company history

When the company started out 30 years ago, vehicle recovery was something of a sideline to the core business of vehicle servicing, repairs and bodywork. This is very different today, where companies specialise, often exclusively in vehicle recovery. Innovation in the 1970s saw the start of a move which would change the direction of Roger Dyson's business. The inspiration was an American tilting platform. The absence of tight restrictions on the length of the rear overhang allowed US operators to use a truck with a long platform which simply tilted down for a car to be loaded.

It was a concept which could not be used on this side of the Atlantic without some radical re-thinking and it was this which produced the slide-bed. The slide-bed overcame the problem by rear overhang limits - simply slide the whole platform back onto the chassis until it provides an acceptable approach angle, load the vehicle, slide the loaded platform forward and off you go. Previously vehicles involved in a crash would be towed away by means of a front end lift, which whilst being adequate for some damaged vehicles, they were clearly unsatisfactory for vehicles that had been severely damaged or shunted at both ends.

Late 1970s

By the late 1970s Roger Dyson, at that time, based in Redditch, had seven dedicated recovery vehicles and four full time drivers. Vehicle recovery was becoming of ever increasing importance. The decision was soon made to give up servicing and repair work. "You can't be a competitor with the motor trade and expect to do their recovery work," was Roger's view.

It was that philosophy which saw the firm change in the mid-1980s from a recovery operator doing a bit of manufacturing, to a dedicated manufacturer.

So, in looking at what the Dyson Group does today it's worth bearing in mind that its success is built on hard experience gained in the real world of hands-on vehicle recovery.
